Drop off your Stuff!

A dear friend passed along an email this morning regarding item donations that are being taken for the next couple days to be sold off at a garage sale this coming weekend (Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th) to benefit an upcoming fundraiser for Maggies Place, a house of hospitality for pregnant women who are alone or on the streets. If you don't know about their wonderful work saving lives and promoting the dignity of women and children, please look at www. maggiesplace.org. If you are in the post-Christmas purge mode, please consider donating anything at all that can be sold for "seed money" as they ramp up to prepare for their first large scale fundraiser on April 17 at City North.

Orchids, Easy As 1, 2, 3...

I am a fan of Orchids and once you figure out how SIMPLE they are
to grow, you will be too. There are a long list of Orchids that are
not only easy to care for but easily purchased. You can walk into almost any Grocery Store and find them sitting in the flower department waiting for you to take them home. I also find my Orchids at Big Box Superstores and the occasional Nursery. Orchids are mass produced and relatively inexpensive. Typically I will pay 15-20 dollars for an Orchid. I expect them to bloom for several months, they never disappoint me.
Here is the deal, they love morning sunshine or a bright, bright light filled room. In nature they grow in steamy jungles attached to sides of trees, catching streams of sunshine and rain filtered through the canopy of leaves from above. The best part is this, at home the only required effort is to put them in the sink every few weeks, soak them with warm water and gently water the leaves. The rest of the time they hang out just enjoying the day and look lovely. I have never had bug problems or mysterious die backs. I believe it is because I do not "over love" them, I give them their space and pay attention to them only a few times a month. They are the perfect choice if you travel and like to come home to flowering beauties.
My favorites are Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids), Cymbidiums and Oncidiums. All are hardy, inexpensive and beautiful.
My Orchids bring me joy every day.
When they are not blooming I put them together in long cachepots so they can rest and recharge. The best part of resting is 6 months later when they burst back into bloom. Oh happy day!

Be My Valentine

We think Valentines Day is the perfect holiday to follow Christmas and the New Year.

Everyone is longing for the warmth of spring and the arrival of flowers, pastels and sunshine.

The color pink does something to bring back the child in us by reminding us to enjoy the simpler things in life like roses, chocolates and even those silly little Valentine's Day cards.

Gone from the pages....

We found out some sad news today... The company that owns Country Home magazine will be shutting the magazine and the website down for good. The March issue will be its last so buy up the magazines while you can! You can read more about the article here.

I think this is a good reminder for all of us to support what we love especially in a shaky economy. Shop at and support your local businesses - even if it might be easier today to run to the megamarts, think of what a sad world it would become if on every corner all we saw were Costcos and Walmarts! I can tell you we'd have some pretty generic homes and lives!

Sharing the Spotlight

While we'd like to pretend that every great idea we ever come up with just comes to us in our sleep - and some do for Bev! - we have to admit that we find inspiration for the store from all over. We are constantly bombarding our desks with magazines, books and any other tidbit or antique we may find useful in creating a story for the store. Nowadays with the internet, it's amazing the wealth of inspiration that is at our fingertips. Even other blogs become inspiring - and we hope you read our favorites listed at the bottom of our page!
